Sultan signs "TrakCare" agreement with InterSystems
 

 

 
     

H. H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and the Supreme President of University of Sharjah signed on Sunday Sep 6, 09 an agreement with InterSystems Corporation (ISC) in order to provide the new Sharjah Teaching Hospital (STH) with one of the best Health Information Management System in the world, “TrakCare”.

Following the signing of the agreement, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan underscored in a statement his deep commitment to making the state-of-the-art Sharjah Teaching Hospital one of the best of such facilities offering world class healthcare services in the country and the region. He said that when the hospital goes into operation, it will represent one of Sharjah's major components of medical excellence by combining medical services with the teaching of medicine for the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences and Scientific Research at the University of Sharjah.

Mr. John McCormick, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ISC, signed the agreement in a ceremony which was attended by H. E. Dr. Hanif Hassan Ali, Minister of Health, Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Chief Executive Officer of Medical Practices and Licensing Section at the Ministry, Prof. Eng. Samy A. Mahmoud, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs.

According to the agreement, the “TrakCare” system will be used in all sections and laboratories of STH which in turn allows physicians and specialists to secure access to online and immediate medical and health information and records associated with each patient so that they can treat patients in more accurate and quick ways. This system will also help in facilitating patient admissions and discharge procedures through an online processing of all details about the patient’s case.

The STH will be a great clinical resource for the people of Sharjah who wish to access a high quality service in an excellent, patient focused environment. The hospital will bea private, non-profit 210-bed hospital with 114 dental chairs.  The hospital will have sufficient capacity and a broad service profile to become the leading teaching hospital for the University of Sharjah. It is due to commence taking patients towards the second quarter of 2010. It is located alongside the Colleges of Medicine & Health Sciences complex at UOS; the Hospital will join the College of Medicine and the Sharjah Medical Research Institute of the Sharjah Medical Excellence Cluster.

STH aims to provide first class healthcare services and treatments provided in conformity to advanced international standards and by highly qualified and experienced doctors and specialists for residents of Sharjah, the UAE, and the region. It will also contain class/training rooms for UOS students of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

Dr. Amr Abdel-Hamid, Special Advisor to His Highness for Higher Education, stated: “Since the beginning of this important project, we have exerted every effort to make His Highness' vision become a reality and reflect providing the best healthcare services with highest quality”. He added, “The buildings are magnificent and the selected medical facilities are outstanding by all standards. Our team conducted a very thorough analysis of all the offers we received from the leading suppliers of patient management systems and found TrakCare to be the most appropriate for our needs. The signing of this agreement is the climax of the excellent work of many specialists, from both sides, to optimize the configuration of TrakCare's modules and their interactions with other systems in the Hospital”.

Prof. Mohammed Husam Al Din Hamdi, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Dean of College of Medicine, said that the "TrakCare system and the associated infrastructure are additional examples of our resolve to use state-of-the-art technologies to support patient care, scientific research and the education and training of medical and health sciences students at UOS".

"This Information system will utilize the best available technologies to enable the  clinical staff to provide high-quality healthcare services while maintaining the efficiency of our operations." Dr. Yaseen Hayajneh, Director of Information Technology at Sharjah Teaching Hospital. “It will improve patient outcomes and services by effectively and efficiently automating and streamlining hospital operations. It will have a major impact on processes such as results reporting and order entry as well as access to diagnostic images and patient information coupled with electronic documentation. In addition, it will lead to improved communication between clinical and administrative staff at the hospital", he added.

Mr. Robert Long from InterSystems said: "We are delighted to be chosen to provide the HIS for this prestigious project.  InterSystems will work closely with the hospital team over the coming months to implement the solution. This integration is a key to realizing one of the primary benefits of TrakCare: its detailed business intelligence and management information”.

The Sharjah Teaching Hospital will include 60 out patient clinics and well equipped six operating rooms in addition to state-of-art diagnostic centers for pathology and medical imaging as well as specialization in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, general and sub-specialty surgical services, medicine, gastroenterology and pediatric services.
