H. H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and the Supreme President of University of Sharjah signed on 29th April 2009  Memorandum of Understanding with two Australian centers for diabetes and cardiac research: the International Diabetes Institute and Baker Heart Research Institute. This MOU is for the interest of the UoS-based Sharjah Centre for Scientific Research.

H. H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan signed the MOU with Prof. Paul Zimmet, Honorary President of the two Australian research centers in attendance of David De Cristor, the governor of Victoria state in Australia, to Prof. Amr Abdul Hamid, the Consultant of Higher Education for H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah, Prof. Samy A. Mahmoud, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, Prof. Salim Sabri, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Husam Al Din Hamdi, Vice Chancellor for the Medical Colleges and Dean of the College of Medicine and Dr Peter Heath as chancellor of American University of Sharjah.

The prime objective of the MoU is to conduct joint research on the genetic and lifestyle factors that cause diabetes and heart diseases as major concerns to the UAE and Gulf region. It is worth to mention that this agreement reflects the strategic approach of Sharjah Centre for Scientific Research towards signing agreements with global leading institutes and universities.
