Gastric sleeve, also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a type of weight loss (bariatric) surgery.  This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, where over half of the stomach is removed, by inserting small instruments through multiple small incisions in the upper abdomen. leaving a tube-shaped stomach about the size and shape of a banana.   Why it's done: This procedure to help you lose excess weight and to reduce your risk of potentially weight-related health problems as: Heart disease High blood pressure High cholesterol Obstructive sleep apnea  Type 2 diabetes Stroke Cancer  Infertility
